Old St. Mellons Environment & Wildlife
Introduction | Local Rivers | Wildlife | Local woodlands | Record

Introduction

Those of us who are lucky enough to live in Old St Mellons are probably aware that this is an area that has been rightly recognised for it's value as much of the area is designated countryside or a conservation area.

Cardiff County Council published a landscape study in 1999 where they recognised the value of the countryside areas within the city. "Around one third of Cardiff is countryside. This varies from the coast to river valley to hilltops over a thousand feet in height. The countryside is a valued resource important for farming, wildlife, recreation and its landscape."

Old St Mellons directly borders 2 of the recognised areas. These are the River Rhymney Corridor and the Northern St Mellons Lowlands Close to our area is also the Wentloog Levels which was singled out for recognition as a particularly valuable area which needs special protection.

All of these areas are worth visiting using the local network of footpaths, where you will see a wonderful variety of plants and animals, but there are many opportunities for wildlife spotting at home as well.

I'd just like to say a special thank you to Andy Kendall for putting the Enviroment & Wildlife area together. All his hard work is very much appreciuated by the Old St Mellons Council as well as residents in the area. Webmaster.

I took this photo this morning whilst walking along Church Lane and I noticed these two (ravens, i think) flying around the Parish Chuch Yard. Taken by Rhys Gregory, 25.07.08
