River Rhymney
The River Rhymney forms part of an important green corridoor which wildlife uses to travel through the urban parts of Cardiff allowing migrations and leading to genetic diversity. A Bat survey carried out on behalf of the Bat Conservation Trust in 2005 along sections of the riverbank resulted in this being identified as the 9th most important site in wales for the Daubentons bat which feeds skimming along the water surface locating insects with its ultrasonic sonar.
Records gathered in 2006 have confirmed a high number of the bats and the position may well increase
The river is liable to flood and many local residents tell tales of Bridge Road being flooded. A map of the flooding area can be seen on the Environment Agency Flood Map. When the area is flooded it still provides a valauble habitiat for wildlife as was seen on the 6th of November 2005 when there were over 100 Black Headed Gulls sheltering from the extreme weather in the fields to the north of Bridge Road.
