Introduction | Local Rivers | Wildlife | Local woodlands | Record

Wildlife

Being an area of mixed agricultural and residential land Old St Mellons attracts a typical selection of garden birds, hedgerow plants and a variety of insects and other animals.

Some highlights include 3 Species of bats (Daubentons, Serotine & Soprano Pipistrelle), and some wonderful stands of Foxglove and Common Spotted Orchid on Church road near the new Fire Training Centre each May/June. However there are unfortunately also some lowlights with the ultra vigorous Japanese Knotweed being a true pest species along the riverbank and streams in the Rhymney river valley.

A number of the fields and hedgerows in the area provide wonderful areas of colour with wonderful areas of some of the common wildflowers such as Red Campion, Daisy and Clover

The attached species listing has been generated in that time and provides a summary of the records that have been gathered by us on walks around local footpaths or identified at home.

Some of these are seen when out and about, whilst others can easily be seen at home. For example mating Large Red Damselflies on a garden pond and Large Yellow Underwing Moth on a garden awning in 2006

Members of the Cardiff Naturalists Society keep records and share them with the local council and other wildlife groups and organizations. If you have any other confirmed records of wild plants and animals they would be gratefully received. Please forward a copy of any records including date precise location and indicating your confidence level in the identifications
